During my stay at Austin Oaks hospital I was well taken care of by the staff. It is a place that provides a safe, nurturing environment. Everyone I dealt with provided supportive and compassionate care.
The only negative experience was in the food that was served. I felt there weren't enough healthy foods like fruits and vegetables and the distribution of "ultra- processed" snacks at some periods of the day could have been replaced with something like an apple or banana.
The psychiatric staff seemed to be attentive to my needs and the needs of others.
I was pleased with the encouragement of the staff to participate in group meetings and the structured time schedule was focused on providing the necessary support of the people being cared for.
My experience was as enjoyable as it could have been under the circumstances. I would certainly recommend Austin Oaks Hospital to anyone who needs psychiatric care.

100/5 stars. great facility, food was delicious, and the tech staff that were with clients throughout every day were AMAZING. namely Dez (both of them), Sarah, and Gisi! they really went above and beyond to make sure clients felt supported and had as good a time as possible, considering our situation. i absolutely recommend this facility

A very rushed stay. My son supposedly received 2 injections for his illness. His behavior is worse than ever since home 2 days. It would be nice if there was at least a follow up call. His prescription in envelope was not explained, also there was supposed to be list of housing in the envelope that wasn't there

The people on their phone line are very unhelpful and rude. I’ve called multiple times to try and get information on billing. I leave the calls feeling mentally exhausted and belittled. It’s so tragic that even a mental health institution doesn’t seem to care about people’s feelings or well-being. It’s all about how they can profit. I suppose that’s part of the American system, though. The only reason I even give two stars is because there are some workers (techs, counselors, nurses, etc.) that were nice when I was inpatient.

When I was in this place, the psychiatrist wouldn't tell my parents what meds I was taking and would not call them back for hours. The nurses didn't have my correct meds at all.

I would be actively having a panic attack and would not be allowed to call my parents because we had "only one call a day", or I was sent to an isolated room with nothing but cameras and one old mattress. The paint on the walls was chipped with messages like "I need my mom", "let it end", "i want to go home", and "they don't care about us". We were kept in there until we "calmed down". The food there was vile, greasy, and cold. For someone with an eating disorder, this made my condition worse. You were provided with an ensure shake, though only if you had medical records of eating disorders; three shakes a day, one for each meal. Ensure shakes are only 220 calories per drink, so we were living off of around 660 calories a day.

When we were allowed to go to "recess" it was in a courtyard which looked identical to a prisons. Spiked fences blocking us from the outside and giant concrete walls with tiny little windows.

Once I was crying and a staff member came up to me and she said verbatim, "listen, you need to stop crying. I don't personally have a problem with it, but the nurses will have to write it down. The more you cry, the longer you're gonna stay here."

Besides a few staff members, whom I can count on one hand, none seemed to truly care about the other kids or I. One women yelled at our group for not showering every morning because it was "nasty and lazy".

My parents pulled me out of this place early because they couldn't believe the treatment. Also, I was 13.

My son was discharged unsafely from this hospital. I would not consider this behavioral health hospital for my loved ones. No one listened to the concerns, the staff just put him in a cab, with no ID, no phone, no shoes. He ended up back in another hospital and received appropriate treatment.

I had an incredible experience! Thanks for helping me get connected with trauma recovery centers. My doctor was amazing and compassionate. Rodney was so kind and everyone treated me with dignity and respect. I can’t thank you enough. I recently changed the hospital I go to and I’m so glad that I came back to Austin Oaks.
